Advanced Phlebotomy Technician Course

Are you already working in the healthcare field? Have you performed at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on real patients within the last five years? Have you always wanted to become certified as a California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I)?

If so, Contra Costa Medical Career College's Online Advanced Phlebotomy Technician Course can help you achieve your certification goals.

Today, employers such as hospitals, physician offices, outpatient laboratories, clinics, and long-term care facilities increasingly require healthcare professionals to possess formal phlebotomy certification. In California, individuals performing venipuncture and skin puncture procedures in a laboratory setting are required to hold appropriate certification as a Phlebotomy Technician.

Contra Costa Medical Career College recognizes the need for accelerated training opportunities for experienced healthcare professionals who already possess blood collection skills but require certification. Physicians, nurses, LVNs, EMTs, Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), Medical Assistants, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals can benefit from our Advanced Phlebotomy Technician Course.

The course provides a comprehensive review of current phlebotomy practices, procedures, safety standards, specimen handling, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements. A variety of learning resources, including instructional content, application exercises, videos, quizzes, and examinations, help prepare students for California-approved national phlebotomy certification examinations.

California CPT I Certification Requirements

Individuals seeking California State certification as a CPT I based on qualifying work experience are required to complete the Advanced Phlebotomy Course.

No externship is required for applicants qualifying through documented work experience. However, students must provide a completed California experience documentation form signed by an authorized Laboratory Director, Physician (MD or DO), or Clinical Laboratory Bioanalyst (CLB). Experience must consist of actual on-the-job patient procedures and may not include procedures performed during a training program.

Important Information

This course is intended for healthcare professionals with qualifying phlebotomy experience who are pursuing CPT I certification through the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services (CDPH-LFS).

This course does not qualify students to become certified as a Limited Phlebotomy Technician.

Students without qualifying phlebotomy experience, or whose experience falls outside the allowable timeframe, must complete a CDPH-LFS approved full phlebotomy training program that includes didactic instruction and a clinical externship.

Most national certifying agencies accept California-approved didactic training as partial fulfillment of their certification prerequisites. Students should contact the certifying agency directly regarding eligibility requirements. A list of California-approved certifying agencies can be found through the California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services (CDPH-LFS).
